With a national expenditure of 3.4 % of GDP for R&D, Japan is a major driver in science. Bioscience and bioresearch are important targets, as outlined by the Science Council of Japan “Vision 2050” and others. Since about 70 % of Japan’s overall R&D budget is spent in industry, applied aspects of bioscience such as biotechnology play an important role, and biotech research and development is firmly rooted in the pharmaceutical, chemical and food industry.
