Japan and environmental biotechnology

After decades of rapid economic growth, environmental pollution in the 1960ies and 1970ies has led to environmental awareness and the installation of methods and technologies for environmental protection. Today, air, water and soil pollution have been widely diminished, and a wide range of technologies for the cleaning of air, water and soil have been established, often based on biotechnology. This includes environmental monitoring based on biosensors.
