Japan and metabolic engineering/cell engineering/synthetic biology

The engineering of microbial and plant cells for synthetic or reporter purposes has a long tradition in Japan. Various groups at universities, at RIKEN, but also in companies have achieved significant results in this area of R&D, e. g., for the synthesis of amino acids, peptides, D-lactic acid, succinic acid and many other chemicals. Plant cells have been engineered to report, e. g., environmental pollution via CYP-coupled reporter systems.
