Several organizations in Japan have embarked on this topic. Starting with the Protein Engineering Research Institute (PERI) in Osaka, later at RIKEN and other academic institutions, significant investments were made to enable scientists to study protein structures and protein substrate interactions. For example, within the “1000 protein project”, major x-ray equipment and a NMR cluster with over 40 instruments up to 800 MHz were installed at the RIKEN Yokohama institute. There is also a synchrotron service (Harima SPring8) available.
