RIKEN team observes mechanism of RNA polymerase by cryo-electron microscopy

RNA polymerase consists of 12 proteins and pinches DNA with "crab scissors" while transcribing it in RNA. Four more proteins are bound in this process. Using cryo-electron microscopy, researchers around Seiki Shunichi and Ehara Haruhiko at RIKENs Structural Biology Group have elucidated the precise mechanism of this complex process.
